2018 Becoming White

In Becoming White, she choreographs happiness as migrant affective labor. Jocson looks at the performance of happiness as labor by constructing the figure of the Disney Princess Snow White. The work involves performance, archival materials, video and sound installation. This choreography finds resonance in the migrant affective labor of Filipino workers in Hong Kong, which is inscribed in within relations of race and global spectacle. She explains, “Disneyland Hong Kong, a’happiness’ as their daily labor. Excluded from the main roles that are reserved from specific racial profiles, they are assigned anonymous supporting roles such as a zebra in Lion King, a coral in Little Mermaid, a monkey in Tarzan.
